Many people probably don't realize that a child anxiety disorder can happen. Most people probably think a child is too young to go through anxiety.

    Whenever I'm having a conversation with someone, sometime during it I start to feel anxiety. As soon as the conversation is finished, and I'm out of dodge, I get a panic attack. I've tried counting down from 100 by 3s, the drug Buspirone, deep-breathing and muscle relaxation. Any suggestions? Also, will exposure, as in subjecting myself to regular social interaction make it worse or better?

      I have the same issue, i get very nervous about 2seconds into a conversation, i have to keep reminding myself that everything is alright and think positively.
      I think it depends on the exposure, you definitely want to start small like a area with a small crowd, if you jump into a situation with lots of people and freak out it could cause a panic attack and make things worse.
      Also i heard good things about cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT), you might want to look into that

    What are the best methods of dealing with panic attacks and O.C.D?
    I have suffered from o.c.d, panic attacks, anxiety and phobias for all of my adult life-I am 42.

      I have OCD also. The thing that is helping me the most (i've gone through a huge change and improvement) is medication, therapy, and counseling. I take Zoloft, prescribed to me by a doctor. This helps both my depression and OCD. My counselor is helping me learn ways to fight off the thoughts in OCD, how to fight 'Mr. Bad' as I call my OCD. Give a name for your OCD, maybe someone you dislike. It's what my counselor told me to do. It gives you a face to fight. Also, think of seeing a therapist or psychiatrist. Personally, I like my counselor better. Hope I helped, and good luck.

    I have quite a bad fear of spiders, by the end of the summer when theres lots of them around i have been known to have panic attacks and refuse to sleep in my own house. Has anyone had any treatment or therapy or something to get over fears/ phobias and has it worked?

      Incremental Exposure: It essentially invovles coming into contact with spiders in increasing doses, starting, for example, by handling a toy spider, or a money spider. If you have panic attacks you should probably consult a professional before engaging in Incremental exposure.

      Other people have tried hypnotherapy and some found it helpful.

      One woman told me when she found out more about what she was scared about it and it lessened her reactions.

      Aversion therapy is a form of behavior therapy in which an aversive (causing a strong feeling of dislike or disgust) stimulus is paired with an undesirable behavior in order to reduce or eliminate that behavior. I do not agree nor recommend this. Some people have had horrific experinces.

      If you have panic attacks you should seek a professoinal because that is a deep phobia and no-one should suffer so greatly without experienced help.

Suddenly Phobic - Am I Going Crazy? It's All in Your Ears!

One of the most frightening aspects of phobic behavior is the way it sometimes appears so suddenly and unexpectedly. One day you're perfectly healthy, happy, and normal. The next day you're phobic. The sudden onset of phobic symptoms is often more frightening than the phobias themselves. Patients wonder: Am I sick? Am I dying? Am I going crazy? Do I have a brain tumor? What is happening to me?

IT'S ALL IN YOUR EARS!

More than 20 percent of the population has some form of inner-ear dysfunction. Some of these individuals are phobic all of their lives. Others never suffer from a single phobia. And some live phobia-free lives for twenty, fifty, or even eighty years before problems suddenly surface. Yet all of these observations can be easily explained and understood once the culprit, the inner-ear system, has been identified. Let me explain.

Even though an impaired inner-ear system is a necessary prerequisite for the development of most phobias, the presence of such a problem does not necessarily lead to phobic behavior. Basically, there are two factors that determine whether or not phobias ever surface:

1) The nature and extent of the dysfunction.

The inner-ear system has millions of cells and circuits. The presence or absence of phobic behavior depends to a large extent on how many of these cells or circuits are malfunctioning and which are malfunctioning.

2) Your ability to compensate.

The brain is often capable of compensating for an impaired inner-ear system, adjusting to it, in a sense, by developing and strengthening mechanisms that counter or neutralize phobic symptoms. If your brain is successfully compensating, you may never be more than vaguely aware that anything is wrong.

In fact, more than three-quarters of the phobic patients never realized they had any inner-ear problem until they learned about the many symptoms that characterize inner-ear dysfunction.

But an impaired inner-ear system is a vulnerable system. If your inner-ear dysfunction is aggravated or your ability to compensate for it is reduced, phobic symptoms may suddenly surface. A wide variety of factors are capable of destabilizing your inner-ear system and bringing on phobic behavior. These factors include:

a Severe or repeated ear infections

a Mononucleosis

a Sinus infections and various other infections known to affect the inner-ear system

a Concussions and/or whiplash

a Degenerative disorders

a Old age

a Tumors or blood clots (or other lesions that put pressure on the inner-ear system)

a Prolonged or turbulent air travel

a Surgical procedures

a Temporomandibular joint syndrome

a Chemical changes in the brain due to:

a. drug use or abuse

b. menopause

c. allergies

d. birth control pills

e. changes in diet

f. emotional stress

g. pregnancy

h. fluctuating hormone levels

i. menstruation

j. anesthesia

Now You Feel It, Now You Don't?

When phobias suddenly surface, one or more of the aforementioned destabilizing factors are usually responsible. In addition, these factors can make preexisting phobias worse. But some persons have noticed that the reverse is also possible: phobias may improve or disappear when destabilizing factors lessen or disappear.

Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Once your fears have been imprinted within the memory banks of your brain, they often take on a psychological life of their own that has little or nothing to do with their inner-ear origins. But this seemingly spontaneous improvement is possible and is clearly related to inner-ear functioning.

Although the sudden appearance, disappearance, and intensification of phobic symptoms has always been noticed by phobics and clinicians, no one has ever offered an acceptable explanation, and for one very good reason.

All previous phobic theories have overlooked the vital importance of the inner-ear system. As a result, they have necessarily overlooked the importance of various factors that can destabilize that system.

    Advice on anxiety /phobic disorders?
    I developed an anxiety/phobic disorder a year & a half ago. Had counselling for 16 wks & medication for panic attacks. I found that CBT improved the situation but hasn't resolved it. I am now seeking long term counselling to continue making progress and have also read several books on counselling and am studying psychology at university. I'm still nowhere near back to being my normal self although I am able to function a bit better day to day. It's very scary and my life is extremely limited. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so have you fully recovered or is this something that I will have to 'manage' for the rest of my life?

      I completely sympathise with your situation. I suffer from anxiety and panic from a sexual assault last year. It makes you feel very isolated and scared, and you are forever craving 'normality' back into your life. I draw a lot of optimism and encouragement from the positive spin you have put on your experiences and how you are getting on with your life. I too have had the counselling and medication and the next step for me is the CBT.

    Do I have any symptoms of an anxiety or phobic disorder?
    I'm 21, in college and I get extremely anxious when I'm in my larger lecture classes of 90 or 150 people. I have a really hard time looking towards the front of the room because I fear the possibility of making eye contact with people sitting in front of me. I'm so scared to face the front that I have to keep my head down and I can only see the board/projection screen by moving my eyes up! From there, I can only look for a few seconds and I look back down again. When a person in front of me turns at a 90 degree angle or makes any sudden movement, that's when it gets really bad and my shoulders and head get really tense and jittery. The entire time, I find it uncomfortable to sit in certain positions and I'm basically stuck in one position. I've never had a problem like this before now; this started in week 6 of this semester and it's week 14 now. This has become a major problem for me and it's getting in the way of taking notes.

    In my larger classes, this is a huge problem, but it isn't an issue in my smaller classes of 20-30 people, where I'm pretty calm.

    Also, I get jumpy when I enter or leave a room and a person pops out in front of me unexpectedly, which has made me apprehensive lately when I'm about to exit a room.

    How would you explain all this? My anxiety issues arise in larger lecture halls and occasionally when I walk through the library. However, I'm fine when I walk around outside.

    I guess one explanation is I've made too many attempts to get a look at girls to the point where it became a bit overbearing and this is how I'm being punished. I was 'too' comfortable looking around and now I'm too scared to look around. This all started when I was in class and a cute girl who was right in front of me looked back in my direction.

    Should I see a therapist or psychologist?

      Sounds to me like anxiety/panic disorder and agoraphobia (google it). It's very common in college students, and my symptoms began when I was in school and unfortunately I had to drop out because I didn't have health insurance and didn't get treated until recently =( I have both anxiety/panic and agoraphobia and I know how you feel, it's horrible.... I have to take xanax (which is an anti-anxiety med) just to leave my house and function like a normal human being!

      Yes, definately make an appt. with a psychiatrist. Therapy never worked for me, but it works for some ppl. A Psychiatrist will most likely put you on an anti-anxiety med like xanax, valium, klonopin, etc. Take only as needed before class. It saved my life!

    I'd like to hear some scientific explanations(I've heard the empty "they wont hurt you" and Germs are a way of life" so many times and by the most ignorant people i know.     Well I go into temporary insanity sometimes(blinding uncontrollable rages) and often think of suicide...still think i wont be commited?

      Find a major distraction such as anything you enjoy and be glued to it, that way u wont be thinking about germs so much.

    I have mild to severe anxiety & phobic or panic disorder.?
    I have aperger's syndrome and learning disabilities growing up. If anyone is a neurologist, psychiatrist or nutritionist, give me advice on what and how many supplements I should take. Also the exact dose & time of day I should take them, And how!,..Remember I take other medications for depression & anxiety. So It needs to be safe & without any bad to severe side effects. I am doing my best to wean off the paroxetine, I was taking 20 mg, But now I'm on 10 mg. I've done this as slow & safe as possible because I know of the bad side-effects. If you're wondering I am 38, married an with 3 children. Also If It's not to much to ask please let me know if I can take something for my lack of sexual satisfaction and premature ejaculation!,..God bless you, I hope you can Help Me!,..Thanks!

Managing Speech Anxiety Problems

Almost everyone has had an experience giving a speech sometime or the other. It may be as the best man at your friend's wedding or as the valedictorian at your graduation ceremony. Everyone agrees, that public speaking doesn't come naturally to most people. Though some people breeze through the monologue comfortably, others have the typical symptoms of speech anxiety.

How To Beat Speech Anxiety

People fear speeches mainly because of the audience and not wanting to look like a failure in front of them. The first step to minimize speech anxiety is to know your audience and prepare the speech according to what they will understand best.

The speech should be in the simplest of words. Try to memorize the concepts and the flow of topics, rather than memorizing words. Difficult concepts may be simplified and put in front of the audience with the help of visual aids, like PowerPoint or over head projectors.

The most important technique to prevent speech anxiety is to practice, practice and practice some more. Knowing your speech well, will give you the confidence needed to ace the speech. Practice should be done on your own, in front of a mirror and then a fake audience. Often people, video tape their speech to review it later and improve anything lacking.

Before the actual day of the speech, exercise to refresh yourself, have a proper meal and dress in your best clothes to boost your confidence. Avoid wearing high heeled shoes or tight fitting clothes as something uncomfortable could distract you from your speech.

The best way to start a speech is slowly and clearly. Try to remain as calm as you can, breathing deeply in between topics. Give yourself a break in between as you go to the projector or screen.

The symptoms of speech anxiety may begin all of a sudden. If you feel the onset of blushing, sweating or you feel your heart racing, pause for a minute, recollect your thoughts and continue as if nothing has happened. Practicing this act will bring you to a stage when you will be in total control of your speech.

Don't let speech anxiety be a problem

Though almost everyone has experienced speech anxiety sometime in their life, there are few people who have been overcome by speech anxiety to such an extent they totally avoid any situation where they might have to give a speech. Often, this phobia of public speaking takes over their personality and makes them lose out on great opportunities in life.

    Bi-Polar, GAD, Social Phobias, Panic Attacks, Depression?
    Im a 22 year old female. I have been diagnosed with all the above. I take Celexa, and Ativan. They seem to help the bi-polar mood swings. The Ativan keeps the panic attacks at bay for the most part.I currently stay with my Sister or Dad. I have no job therefore no car or anything. I don't work b/c I can't make it through an interview without panic. Not normal jitters. I have had people hand me my application back in the interview. If I do manage to get a job the bi-polar usually kicks in about 3 months in and something goes wrong. I might also have anger issues and I am viewed as co-dependent. I don't have problems being around people or going out as long as they are people that I already know. New people, in groups, not good. I have tried to get disability, but they say that because I can read, write, and do basic math that I am not disabled... Not sure what that has to do with any of my problems, but Okay.
    I do nothing. I sit in the house for most of the day. I do go places with my friends and family. I drink because it erases my nerves and panic and I am free to be out in the world. Thinking about quitting therapy. My family supports me. My Mom and Dad are both disabled, mother mentally, she is also bi-polar, and my father physically. My sister is a single mom of three kids.

Do You Know What Is A Panic Attack?

What is panic attack? A brief period of time that involves extreme emotions with a lot of fear, all of which has a high psychological impact and seems to physically afflict the victim with problems that are imaginary but feel very real.       Good for you for furthering your education. I think there are two issues. First, some people really do have poor night vision. And if you do, getting over your fear of driving at night isn't going to help you because in that case then maybe you shouldn't be driving at night.

      If someone who has poor vision was on here sharing the exact same scenario we wouldn't be suggesting therapy to get over his fears, we would be telling him that he should not be driving.

      You are having anxiety about this. Perhaps you could go to an eye doctor and talk to him about your difficulty with night driving and he could give you some suggestions. If he says that you are OK to drive then I would seek counseling to help with your anxiety around it. Regardless, therapy can help you work through your feelings about the accident.

      For me, I don't like driving during rush hour traffic so I avoid making appointments during these times. It just means I plan around it. In my line of work, I can do this. Maybe you just need to find a day class or carpool with someone. There are ways around this so that you can be here for your daughter, further you education, and be a safe driver.

      And there are always the practical tools, like flipping your rear view mirror (changing the angle) to cut down on the glare from other car lights.

Breast Enhancement Using Hypnosis

There are few careers that provide conversations as interesting and entertaining as that of a hypnotist. Although I never expected to be involved with anything related to breast enhancement using hypnosis, I have learned a lot about the subject since starting my practice in 1980.

My work has involved hundreds of individuals who wanted to make changes in their lives. Even though I have worked with businesses in several fields as a trainer and coach, I chose to specialize in weight loss due to my concern for health, especially women’s health in honor of my mother. Whenever I’m near a conversation about weight loss or dieting I have to remind myself to “keep it brief” because I tend to talk for hours once I start.

The most often asked question I encounter the word hypnotist is mentioned is, “Can I be hypnotized?” After that’s out of the way the conversation usually becomes more personal. This is especially true once I talk about the issues I have worked with over the years.

I still marvel at the response of one client who suffered with a phobia related to driving on expressways and over bridges. Her 3 day “cure” provided her with freedom from a debilitating fear that restricted her ability to travel for more than 20 years.

I truly enjoy my calling and the feeling I get when I help a client experience a breakthrough. While I have observed some nearly miraculous changes in behavior I had not observed dramatic physical changes, other than weight loss, until an incident I witnessed about 10 years ago.

This single observation ultimately led to my consideration of working with clients requesting breast enhancement using hypnosis. This unique experience has introduced me to an even deeper understanding of the role the mind plays in our lives.

Let’s begin by clarifying the definition of hypnosis. Once you know more about hypnosis you’ll soon learn it is not what is demonstrated in the movies. The process of trance induction and session experience is much too boring to hold anyone’s attention for the two hours required to watch it unfold in a movie.

Hypnosis can be explained as a state of mind you enter anytime your attention is focused on a narrow frame of reference. Most often we experience this state while watching TV, at the movies, reading a book or listening to an interesting lecture.

Your body’s functions slow down and distractions are minimized and you find yourself feeling very relaxed and comfortable. It is this state that is experienced during a session with a hypnotist. Most people can be hypnotized and often have, even if they were unaware of being entranced.

Depending on a number of circumstances the range of experiences and changes that can be produced through hypnosis is nearly unlimited. Naturally the skill, style and experience of the therapist are vitally important to the successful experience of the client.

What is most important is the client’s motivation to experience the change that is being sought. I have helped highly motivated clients become smoke free in less than 5 days. I have learned not to accept clients with low levels of motivation because their results are never satisfactory.

This is especially important when the concern is breast enhancement using hypnosis. While this has been the presenting request for only a dozen or so clients in my practice, many therapists are receiving more such request every year. In my experience the clients have been the most highly motivated group of any set of clients I’ve encountered.

Let’s look at what is possible through the power of the mind and I’ll use the experience I alluded to earlier. My interest in working with women who were requesting breast enhancement using hypnosis grew out of an observation of a very unusual malady called pseudocyesis.

The situation concerned a cousin of a client who experienced a false pregnancy. It was the first time I had observed such symptomology in an individual. All appearances led everyone who saw this lady to take it for granted she was pregnant. Even she believed she was pregnant.

She had not been pregnant before and was not married at the time. Additionally, because she felt no pain or discomfort she did not see a doctor until late in her 9th month. Upon completion of a thorough examination the doctor revealed she had indeed experienced a false pregnancy.

The medical name, pseudocyesis, is applied to this condition. While there are many varied explanations, there are few that have been accepted generally. Most often the theory speaks of emotional conflicts or an intense desire of the individual to be pregnant.

It is held that the intensity of the individual’s desire triggers functions and reactions in the endocrine system, which could explain some of the symptoms, e.g. enlarged breast, morning sickness, etc.

The mix of theories includes wish fulfillment, which basically postulates, if a woman wants to be pregnant with a strong enough focus of thought and emotional energy, changes in her body can be manifested. At that point biological modifications affecting weight gain and realignment of fatty tissue are the outcome.

It is this observation and my research on pseudocyesis, combined on my own experience and understanding of how the mind works that led me to consider a new challenge. At that point I began to accept clients interested in breast enhancement using hypnosis.

There is vast information available on the natural options for breast enhancement. I am confident there is a match for every individual and hypnosis is a proven and viable options for many, however many other options have value. I prefer to introduce the process of breast enhancement using hypnosis because it has a good track record and works best with individuals who are highly motivated about the expected results.

Naturally surgical approaches are demonstrated over the airwaves but the results, while dramatic, are not without cautions. Definitely, surgery is quicker and easier as a process for enhancing breast size, however one must definitely consider the side effects.

If a two to three and a half cup size enhancement is adequate, hypnosis is the safest option available. I recommend and encourage consideration of dietary and herbal options as well.

For instance, it has been documented, and references are easily found online, that identify so called "breast foods" that can help the body’s response to enhancing the size of the breast.

Estrogen impacts breast tissue and the role of estrogen during puberty is well documented. Certain vitamin supplements are promoted as being effective and combined with selected foods one can realize measurable results.

Here’s what I coach prospective clients to do when considering breast enhancement.

• Take a break from listening to well meaning friends, especially those who like to spread the latest hot topic around like it’s the gospel truth.

• Use your owe resources e.g., reliable top shelf magazines across the board to get a balanced perspective of the options. Health magazines, main stream women’s magazines, no promotional consideration has been offered for this one, however based on her reputation for always attracting the best experts, Oprah’s magazine is a good one to add to your research.

• Be sure to talk with your doctor. If your doctor is not a specialist in nutrition and alternative health care, get a referral.

• Don’t make a decision before you’ve slept on it. The worst mistake you can make is to spend more time planning a vacation than you spend making a decision about breast enhancement.
Finally, if you have any level of interest in pursuing breast enhancement, I encourage you to do something!

The very worst thing you can do, in regard to your mental health, is to have a burning desire to make a change and fail to act on it. The second worst thing you can do is procrastinate.
